MANOR TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The zoning board in Manor Township, Lancaster County, rejected Wal-Mart's plan to build a store off Centerville Road.
Residents cheered the township zoning board's decision during Monday night's meeting. The board decided Wal-Mart's application did not meet all the zoning requirements, specifically regarding traffic issues.
Residents have been fighting Wal-Mart's plans to build a store on 29 acres south of Centerville road for nearly a decade.
"Wal-Mart did not meet the ordinance. We had only one decision to make," said board Chairman Al Granger.
"I'm thrilled. It's what our democracy is all about. Wal-Mart has a right to be. We have a right to say, 'not in this location,'" said Manor Township resident Patti Hudson.
Wal-Mart has 30 days to appeal the zoning board's decision.
